While right now is a fantastic time to buy a new 2019 Ford model like the 2019 Ford Explorer, drivers in the Alpena, MI area who are waiting to see what’s next may not have to wait too much longer. That’s because Ford automakers have plenty in store for future models, starting with the 2020 Ford Explorer, which goes on sale later this year.

Ford plans to provide drivers with the same rugged and robust capabilities you expect from models like the 2019 Ford F-150, while increasing these models’ fuel economy. To achieve greater efficiency without sacrificing power, Ford plans to launch a hybrid version of many different models.

The upcoming system is called “modular hybrid technology,” and it’s designed for vehicles based on rear-wheel drive platforms that use a 10-speed automatic transmission. We’ll see the first of this new hybrid system on the upcoming 2020 Ford Explorer. The electric motor makes 44 horsepower on its own and its paired with a 3.3-liter V6 engine producing a total 318 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

However, if you still fancy an old fashioned gas engine on its own and want some extra power, you can get the 2020 Ford Explorer ST model which offers a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

While the 2020 Ford Explorer isn’t the only model getting the hybrid treatment, Ford automakers haven’t said yet which other vehicles are confirmed, although we expect to see it on the hybrid Ford F-150, and possibly on the upcoming Ford Bronco.
